Recently, at Berkeley's Townsend Center, I heard Bill Viola say this about media tools: "These technologies are not modeled on the physical world, stones and trees and mountains. They're modeled on ideas, on the blood flowing through your veins... little sparks and synapsis in your brain..." and it struck me, of course, that that is what I love about digital media. But it also struck me that what I love about painting is that it can be modeled on stones, trees and mountains because of its materiality. After several years of working primarily in video, I recently returned to painting as one of a gang of activities. Some of the paintings included here take their titles from a current project based on Moby Dick. |
